Where to Seek Information on Disability Insurance in Major States

There are lots of information available in the form of posters, websites, pamphlets, brochures, etc. on state disability insurance program to notify the employees of their rights to disability benefits. These should be distributed or provided to employees as soon as they are hired. Here are some of the resources available on state disability insurance program per state:

In California, the State Disability Insurance (SDI) offers the following contact information: For Disability Insurance Claim and General Information call 1 - 800 - 480 – 3287 (English) or 1 - 866 - 658 - 8846 (Spanish). Their busiest schedule is from Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 3 PM, so it would be best to call outside these hours. For information in English on Paid Family Leave, call 1-877-BE-THERE. If you are a California State Government employee and you are not covered by SDI, you can call 1-866-758-9768 for information on the Non-industrial Disability Insurance program.

In Hawaii, the Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) is administered by the Disability Compensation Division. It is mandated that an employer should provide readily accessible printed statement on employee’s benefit rights, claims for benefits, and other matters related to the administration of the workers' compensation law. For inquiries, call (808) 586-9161. For insurance related coverage through authorized carriers or self-insurance, call (808) 586-9166.

In New York, the Disability Benefits or Insurance is administered by the Workers' Compensation Board who process employee’s claims for benefits and receives injury reports from employer and medical reports from health care provider. They can be contacted using customer service toll–free number (877) 632-4996.

In Rhode Island, the Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) is administered by the Department of Labor and Training. For inquiries on application, benefits, and claims application, call (401) 462-8420. You can speak to a customer service representative if you call between 8 AM and 3:50 PM Monday- Thursday and between 9 AM and 3:50 PM on Friday. Entire claim and personal identification (PIN) numbers are required when you call.

In New Jersey, Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) is administered by the Division of Temporary Disability Insurance under the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. For state plan operations and private plan operations, call customer service information center at (609) 292-7060. For disability during unemployment, call (609) 292-3349 or (609) 292-3842.
